Hikarigama means "illuminated kiln" in Japanese. It was given this name by Hiroshi Ogawa upon its completion. He hoped the kiln would be illuminated by the wood and the spirit of the potters who fired the kiln.
THE PROCESS: It takes two days to load the 2 chambered, ana-noborigama style kiln. The firings usually take 4 to 5 days, use 6 cords of wood (fir, alder, oak), and cools for 1 week before opening.
